On August 7, the launching ceremony of the first passenger ship in Russia to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) was held in the city of Zelenodolsk. The vessel was built by the Zelenodolsk Shipyard, a member of the Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation, as part of a pilot project for the creation of LNG-powered river vessels in cooperation with Gazprom. Its designer was the Zelenodolsk Design Bureau.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Armaments of the Russian Navy Igor Mukhametshin, Deputy Commander for Armaments of the Caspian Flotilla Igor Smirnov, Director of Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Equipment Department at the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Boris Kabakov, Prime Minister of Tatarstan Aleksey Pesoshin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of Tatarstan Albert Karimov, and others.
The Chaika LNG tourist ship was laid down in February 2020. Its length is 58.8 m, breadth, 10.8 m, and passenger capacity, up to 176 people. The vessel is equipped with latest air conditioning and heating systems, and an Audioguide system in five languages. It also has a panoramic view and the ability to cruise under low bridges.
This is the first Russia’s experience in building a LNG-powered vessel using domestic components. To use liquefied natural gas as fuel, the ship is equipped with 2 cryogenic tanks, 6.7 m3 each. The LNG supply for refuelling the vessel will be provided by Gazprom Gazomotornoye Toplivo.
