79 years to Kazan Helicopters

4 September 2019, Wednesday

On September 4, 2019, the Kazan Helicopters of the Russian Helicopters Holding (part of the Rostec Corporation) marks the 79th anniversary since its founding.

In honour of this event, over 90 factory workers were awarded with certificates of appreciation and gratitude from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, the Tatarstan Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Tatarstan, the Rostec Corporation, the Russian Helicopters Holding, and the Federal Service for Military Technology Cooperation.

The birthday of the enterprise is considered to be September 4, 1940, when the Leningrad Aviation Plant No. 387 was established. With the outbreak of WWII, it was evacuated to Kazan and merged with the local factory of transport parts No. 169.  During the war, the plant manufactured about 11,000 Po-2 light night bombers.

The turning point in the plant’s history was the start of production of the first domestic mass-produced helicopter Mi-1 in 1951. But a company’s brand identity is the legendary Mi-8/17, one of the most numerous helicopters in the aviation history, which is produced even today and is operated in 92 countries throughout the world.

Since 1997, the Kazan Helicopters has been certified as a helicopter developer: serially produced Ansat light twin-engine helicopter recently marked 20 years since its first take-off on August 17, 1999.
