The ANO Russian Quality System (Roskachestvo) investigated domestic sparkling wines and ranked the best drinks. The stereotype of the low quality of Russian sparkling wines has not been confirmed.
The study was conducted as part of the Wine Guide of Russia created by the Roskachestvo together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. In 2019, a total of 129 samples of sparkling wines from Russian grapes were purchased for tasting assessment.
The results of the study can be seen at the Roskachestvo portal (in Russian).
Roskachestvo reminds that when choosing a sparkling wine for the New Year’s table, one should carefully read the label to choose a wine and not something else. If there is no inscription stating “sparkling wine” or “Russian champagne” on the front of the label, turn the bottle and read the small text on the counter label. You may have a “carbonated wine drink” in which wine is at best half of the volume, and everything else is water and flavourings. If the words “Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)” or “Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)” are added to the name of “sparkling wine” or “pearl wine”, then the wine is made from grapes in a specific region within the borders of the Russian Federation.
Happy New Year!
