Today, Naberezhnye Chelny saw ceremonial events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Nizhnekamsk Hydroelectric Power Plant. The events were attended by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of Tatarstan Albert Karimov.

In honour of the round date, the commemorative stela was opened on the Gidrostroiteley Street. The monument in the form of a hydraulic turbine symbolises the labour feats of builders, installation and hydropower professionals, who participated in the HPP construction.

Also within the programme, the ceremonial meeting of the Energetik Palace of Culture took place with the participation of Nizhnekamsk HPP construction veterans. They were awarded certificates of honour, letters of appreciation, and memorable gifts. Some employees of the Nizhnekamsk HPP were also awarded the title of the Honoured Power Engineer of Tatarstan.

The Nizhnekamsk HPP is the only hydroelectric power station in the structure of Tatenergo and on the territory of Tatarstan, is part of the Volga-Kama cascade of hydroelectric power plants. This is an up-to-date high-tech company with an installed capacity of 1,205,000 kW, which is about 23% of the total installed capacity of Tatenergo. Since the start of the Nizhnekamsk HPP operation, more than 66 billion kWh of electricity has been generated. To date, a long-term programme for the hydroelectric power plant upgrade has also been developed for 2020-2049.
